What is a pressure regulator?

Self-operated pressure control

A pressure regulator is a self-operated final-control device: it holds a set pressure on its own, with no external signal or power. Every regulator works through three essential elements — a restricting element (plug and orifice), a measuring element (the diaphragm that senses the pressure) and a loading element (the spring or pilot that sets the target). The sensed pressure works against the loading element, and the regulator opens or closes to hold the setpoint as flow and inlet pressure change.

Direct-operated regulators are simple and fast; pilot-operated regulators add accuracy and capacity for demanding service. A pressure-reducing regulator controls the downstream pressure; a backpressure / relief regulator controls the upstream pressure and protects against overpressure — and slam-shut devices add a fast safety cutoff.

Selecting a regulator

A model number isn't enough

Picking the right regulator comes down to a handful of things. Give us as many as you can and our application engineers do the rest — narrowing by setpoint, checking the inlet rating and confirming the regulator will open and hold under your conditions.

We'll also pick the right style: direct-operated for simple, fast control, or pilot-operated for higher accuracy and capacity.

1 Application & fluid Air, steam, fuel gas, tank blanketing, process chemicals, liquids or sanitary service.
2 Outlet pressure (setpoint) The reduced downstream pressure to hold — the control pressure range.
3 Maximum inlet pressure The highest upstream pressure — it must not exceed the product rating.
4 Flow / capacity The maximum flow the regulator must pass at your conditions.
5 Accuracy required How tightly the setpoint must be held (droop / tolerance).
6 Body & pipe size A body size at or below your pipeline size, with your end connections.
7 Minimum differential pressure Enough inlet-to-outlet difference to fully open the main valve.

By application

Regulators for the services you run

Whatever the fluid, tell us the duty and we'll match a Fisher™ regulator to it.

» Air & nitrogen Instrument and utility air, nitrogen supply.
» Steam Steam distribution and pressure reduction.
» Fuel gas Burner, boiler and furnace fuel-gas supply.
» Tank blanketing Vapor-space pressure control and vapor recovery.
» Process chemicals Corrosive and demanding chemical service.
» Liquids Liquid pressure control and relief.
» Sanitary Hygienic / sanitary process service.

Genuine OEM

Genuine Fisher™ regulator spare parts

A regulator drifts off setpoint when its soft parts wear — a hardened diaphragm, a tired spring, a worn seat. We supply genuine OEM diaphragms, springs, seat rings, discs, restrictors, O-rings and pilot parts so your regulators hold pressure and protect the system. A will-fit diaphragm or spring can quietly shift the setpoint and the relief behavior; genuine parts protect them.

Genuine Fisher™ OEM spare parts — trim sets, cages, seat rings, packing and more

Send us a regulator serial number, model or your inlet/outlet conditions and our team will identify and quote the right Fisher™ regulator or parts.

Questions

Regulator FAQ

Are these genuine Fisher™ regulators and parts?
Yes. We supply genuine OEM Fisher™ regulators and spare parts — no will-fit or look-alike components.
Can you supply just the spare parts — diaphragms, springs, seats?
Yes. Spare parts are our core: diaphragms, springs, seat rings, discs, restrictors, O-rings and pilot parts to keep installed regulators on setpoint.
Direct-operated or pilot-operated — which do I need?
Direct-operated regulators are simple and fast for moderate accuracy; pilot-operated regulators add accuracy and capacity for demanding or high-flow service. Tell us the duty and we will match it.
Pressure reducing or backpressure?
A pressure-reducing regulator controls the downstream (reduced) pressure; a backpressure or relief regulator controls the upstream pressure and limits buildup. We supply both.
Do you handle overpressure protection / slam-shut?
Yes — slam-shut and integrated overpressure-protection devices that cut gas flow fast on an over- or under-pressure event.
Can you identify the regulator from its serial number?
Send us the regulator model or serial number and our team will identify it and the parts you need.
